The 20 Best Places to Open a Home Organizer Business

Getting organized might come easy for some folks, but some people need all the help they can get.

Professional home organizers make a living doing just that—helping bring order to those who have messy homes. Some people are too busy to sort their things, while some just lack the skills. Whatever the case may be, home organizers can step in and redo everything from your overflowing kitchen cabinets, scattered home office or out of control closet.

While not a large industry (the National Association of Professional Organizers has about 4,000 members), home organizers can be found in cities across the country. Some cities have more established professional organizing industries, while in others it is a relatively new concept. Celebrity organizers like Marie Kondo and Peter Walsh have helped raise awareness of the services that home organizers can provide as well.

The rise of home organizing got us at SpareFoot wondering: Where are the best places for home organizers to start a business?

To answer this, we teamed up with Thumbtack.com, an online service that connects consumers with skilled professionals to get things done—including finding a professional organizer.

20 best cities to open a home organization business

The Top 20 Cities

Based on their marketplace data, Thumbtack recently identified the metro areas in America with the most market opportunity for home organizers. The Thumbtack Market Opportunity Index is based on three factors: market size, market growth and supply relative to demand.

Thumbtack also provided the average price per job home organizers earn in each of those metro areas.

We took the 20 cities with the highest market opportunity and ranked them by affordability. To determine affordability, we calculated the number of organizing jobs it would take to pay one month’s rent in each city, and the number of organizing job it would take to equal the median home price in each city.

To determine our final ranking, we combined rankings for the Thumbtack Market Opportunity Index, number of jobs to cover rent each month, and number of jobs to equal the median home price.

2016 median home prices was obtained from Realtor.com and current median rents were obtained from Zumper.com.
